Helpful Advice When Breeding Leopard Geckos

Need help in breeding leopard geckos? The designer lizards are ‘easy’ to breed but getting the resulting lizard that you want can be a bit trickier than you anticipate. Don’t worry; we’re here to give you some advice so you can get to produce the desired designer lizards in no time.

Sex (The Technical Kind)

Of course, before your lizards can get down to business, you’d want to know which one is the boy and which one the girl. This can be done by flipping the lizards over and examining their underbellies near the tail. You will be looking for the hemipenal bulges near the vent of the creature underneath the tail. Males will have the hemipenal bulges as well as pre-anal pores somewhere in the middle of the hind legs.

Be careful when you are examining the animals. First, be sure that your animals are used to being handled. If you need a little more help with taming, try to get your pets used to human contact for a certain amount of time per day. Have them crawl from one hand to the next, over and over again for about half an hour or so and repeat the process daily until the lizard gets used to the contact.

Also, try to watch out for some confusing sigs. Some females actually have enlarged pits or other structures that can be mistaken for the pre-anal pores. Plus, fat is stored near the area of the reproductive organs, in the tail so the extra fat can be mistaken for bulges.

The Right Age

Usually, you’d want to wait until your lizard is around 8 months old before you start to think about breeding them. However, sometimes you’ll have to wait a little longer because some of the traits that you’d want change over age and you’ll want to make sure that you are breeding the right kind of trait. For example, some giants can take about a year to reach their optimal size and if you want to see which giant you’d want to breed the next generation, you’d do well to wait out a bit just to see which lizard beats out all the rest. It is common for siblings from a generation to exhibit different traits or varying degrees of the trait.

Sex (The Other kind)

Once you’ve gotten the lizard couple that you want, you’re probably ready to get the happy couple to mate. This may be one of the easiest parts as you won’t have to do much… you just have to place the happy couple in a tank and check if the female accepts the male’s advances. You’ll have to monitor the process though as mating can get violent, with biting and fighting commonplace. If you think the female is resisting too much, try to separate the two lizards for a couple of days and try again.

All you’ve got to do now is to make sure that you have everything you need to ensure the female is happy once she is pregnant and she will have no problems. The most essential piece of the pregnancy would be the humid hide. This can be the same hide you use for shedding. This will serve as the nursery for the eggs. It’ll take about a month for the female to begin laying eggs. Some recommend feeding them pinky mice or small mice but don’t overdo it… it’s not as healthy as the other foods.
